What We Believe
We believe that great architecture should be beautiful, inspirational, uplifting, and important; and that great design can make the World a better place. Really, we do!
Design is more than creating beautiful things; architecture is more than designing beautiful buildings or interiors. Architecture is a potent art that can inspire and comfort, motivate and heal. Architecture is also a process of analysis, research, problem solving, and ultimately of making – buildings and systems, places and things. We love the art and process, and believe that the successful merging of both leads to great World-changing design.
We have a passion for people and place, for potential and opportunity. At the core of successful design is a beautiful process; these passions are at the core of our design philosophy and guide us through the design process. Architecture is for people, by people; and thus must come from careful listening and observation, but steered by not just what is possible or has been done before but by what has yet to be done and may be seen impossible, and results in uplifting design reflective of our values while sustaining our environment.
“Open” is: collaborative.
A collaborative process leverages strengths while diminishing weakness to create an outcome greater than the sum of the elements; true value germinates from the open sharing of ideas. Architecture and design are about both process and product, where process is the foundation upon which the product stands. Value in design is guaranteed from beginning to end with a thorough understanding of craft and contemporary processes of making and fabrication; thus assuring authenticity and quality execution. Bringing together the best of each participant leads more thoroughly and immediately to innovative solutions.“Open” is: inclusionary.
Good design benefits community – whether it is a product that works better and lasts longer, a shared space embraced by a community and that fosters communication (and through open dialogue we can better know and understand each other), or a house, local business, or place of employment that promotes growth, fulfillment, well-being, and security. Sharing the benefits of good design with all and not just a fortunate few advances both the local and regional community and economy. By embracing all facets of the environment of design, inclusionary architecture comprises assuring continuance and sustainability through energy and resource efficient design and construction while providing firmness and permanence in structure and flexibility in use.“Open” is: creative.
Without preconceived notions, opportunities become limitless. Deploring style as false security and a buttress to constrain the quantity of influences, each design project benefits from greater openness of mind. Designing for the future observes precedents but focuses on contemporary inspiration from all fields of study and exploration. Each design is a response to the almost limitless number influences effecting the build environment: context, time, program, space, environment, politics, and energy to name a few. This approach is rooted in Regionalism, providing a more thorough concept of architecture that sustains and serves as a catalyst for regenerative development that rebuilds and advances both the natural and built environment. We shape design and thereafter design shapes us…We believe in the power of one person, or a small group of people working collaboratively, to make a significant difference to improve the human condition while sustaining and restoring our natural and crafted environments.
